Grundfos Commercial Building Services clearly understands that tension, because they chose to stage their latest modular-systems event not in a sterile conference room, but aboard HMS Belfast moored on the Thames — a ship assembled from prefabricated sections long before off-site construction became an industry buzzword.

On June 25th, the company brought consultants, engineers, contractors and distribution partners from across the UK and Europe onto the historic vessel for an afternoon called "Off-site, On Board: The Future of Modular Systems." The setting wasn't just a gimmick; it was a lived demonstration of the principle the event was selling. HMS Belfast was bolted together in a shipyard from large factory-built modules, and the parallel to today's pump skids, prefab plant rooms and factory-tested packaged systems felt genuinely instructive — not forced.

What the factory-floor engineers actually showed

Presentations came from Grundfos engineers based at their Sunderland manufacturing facility, and this is where the event shifted from corporate showcase to something more useful for anyone specifying or installing pumping equipment. The focus was concrete: commercial building applications, fire protection systems and water utility packages built as modular units and shipped ready to connect.

The benefits they walked through won't surprise you if you've ever wrestled a bespoke plant-room installation into a tight programme — faster installation, improved quality assurance because the assembly happens under controlled factory conditions, and simplified commissioning when the wiring, controls and hydraulic connections are already tested before the lorry arrives. What stood out, though, was the emphasis on occupied and complex buildings. If you're upgrading a hospital pump room or retrofitting a tower block's booster set while residents are still drawing water, the argument for a factory-built drop-in module becomes less about elegance and more about risk reduction. Fewer surprises on-site. Fewer callbacks. Shorter disruption windows that keep building managers — and their tenants — from losing patience.

Pieter Swart, Grundfos' Head of Specification for Fire & Modular Systems, framed it plainly: the industry is moving toward solutions that improve efficiency while cutting on-site complexity, and more customers are recognising what factory-built systems actually deliver when the pressure is on. No grand theory — just a shift in how people are choosing to design, deliver and install building infrastructure.

What this means if you're specifying pump systems

If you're the person who has to live with the installation after the contractors leave, a few things are worth checking on your next project. Ask your suppliers whether the packaged system you're pricing actually ships factory-tested or merely factory-assembled — there's a real difference when you're standing in a plant room at 2 a.m. wondering why the commissioning engineer can't get the VFDs to talk to the BMS. Push for documentation on what happens to the warranty when the unit is modular versus site-built; the economics of modular only make sense if the service pathway is clear and the spares situation isn't a maze. And if you're working on occupied buildings, start the conversation about modular early — the biggest wins come when the design team commits to a factory-built approach before the project is too far along to re-route pipework and structural supports.

The Grundfos event didn't deliver a revolution. What it did, more usefully, was put real engineers in front of a room full of people who build and maintain these systems daily, and show how the gap between factory floor and job site keeps narrowing. For those of us who've spent enough shifts listening to a pump cavitate because something went wrong during a rushed site-assembly, that's a gap worth closing.
